Micromax intros Canvas Doodle 2: 5.7-inch screen, quad-core power, Rs. 20,000 price

After spectacularly leaping to number two in Indian smartphone sales and even closing in on Samsung, the market’s leader, we’re sad to inform you Micromax looks unable or unwilling to further step its game up.

Not only does the Canvas 4, the company’s latest flagship phone, look underwhelming and overpriced compared with contenders from Spice or Gionee, but Indian tech-savvy folks are likely to be terribly disappointed with Micromax’s latest effort to conquer the “phablet” niche as well.

Okay, maybe “terribly disappointed” is a bit of an exaggeration, but still, the Canvas Doodle 2 doesn’t look in any way special. And its price is too damn high, considering what it has to offer – INR 19,990, or around 311 US bucks.

Already available for sale via a number of Indian retailers, the Doodle 2 probably has the biggest selling point in that it’s equipped with a stylus for… well, doodling. Of course, this fellow’s pen is unlikely to be as cool or functional as the S Pens that come standard with Samsung’s Galaxy Notes, so let’s move on.

To the large display, measuring 5.7 inches in diagonal, but boasting a sub-par 1,280 x 720 pixels resolution and a 257 ppi pixel density. That’s bad, Micromax, and you should feel bad.

Sadly, things get even worse when peeking beneath the 5.7-incher’s hood, where a modest quad-core 1.2 GHz MediaTek 6589 CPU lies, alongside 1 GB of RAM and a decent but certainly not impressive 2,600 mAh battery.

What else? Well, the Canvas Doodle 2 does run Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean and features 12 MP/5 MP cameras, so it’s not all doom and gloom.

But why in the hell are the 16 GB of on-board storage not expandable via microSD support? It’s not like this thing rocks an aluminum unibody, right? Oh, well, it is what it is and at least you have options in case you’re as dissatisfied as I am about this phone’s meager quality-price ratio.
