Nintendo has recently announced a $50 price cut for the 32 GB Wii U deluxe set. Beginning Sept. 20, the deluxe version of Nintendo’s tablet-and-console system will be available for $299.
The Wii U price cut will compliment the limited edition Zelda: The Wind Waker HD bundles, which will also in turn be $299 and come with a customized gamepad along with a digital version of the iconic fan-favorite release.
Along with the price reduction, Nintendo is also introducing a new entry-level handheld system that does everything the 3DS does except it’s in 2-D. The Nintendo 2DS*has been confirmed to play all 3DS and DS games in 2-D, and will is slated to release in October for a price point of $129.
“Nintendo has one of the strongest and most diverse video game lineups in our history,” said Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America’s president and COO.
“Today we’re making those unique Nintendo experiences more accessible and affordable. However you play and whatever you play, Nintendo has you covered.”
While Nintendo may be floundering in the next-gen war, these promotions and new releases may prove to fruitful strategies to bolster their wavering stance in the gaming market. Although various Wii U releases like Pikmin 3*and New Super Luigi U*have done exceedingly well, the sales of the Wii U remain paltry and the price reduction offers an incentive for gamers.
Despite their staunch declaration that the Wii U won’t receive a price cut, the Japanese gaming titan is keen on taking advantage of the upcoming holiday season and coupled with these new price cuts and the upcoming Q4 lineup, Nintendo may see improved sales of the Wii U.
The 3DS still remains one of Nintendo’s strongest assets, and the introduction of the cheaper 2DS that can play all 3DS titles seems like a good move–depending on the overall performance and of course weighing the cons including the fact that the 2DS doesn’t conveniently fold.
The Wii U price drop is coming just in time to meet the system’s expansive Q4 lineup, which includes such anticipated titles as**Rayman Legends, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD and of course the multi-platform versions of Call of Duty: Ghosts, Watch_Dogs, and Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag–all of which will be complimented by the retail price reduction.
The 2DS will launch in October alongside*Pokémon X/Y and right in time for other 3DS games like*The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds,*EGO Marvel Super Heroes: Universe in Peril. Planning the Wii U price drop and 2DS releases to match the upcoming lineup is a smart move, and may pay off nicely for Nintendo.
It’s interesting to see that Nintendo hasn’t lost its game, so to speak, and that they are still hard at work planning new strategies and releasing new products in an effort to not only reinforce their lackluster hardware sales but to provide innovative products to the gaming world.
The Wii U’s price drop from $349 to $299 will take effect on Sept. 20, and the Nintendo 2DS is scheduled to launch on Oct. 12, 2013 for $129.
