HTC Zara Mini breaks cover, headed to China with 4.3-inch panel and Android 4.1

What’s that you say, HTC has plenty of mid-end, budget-friendly smartphones out and about and it needs one more as much as John McAfee needs more easy money? Sorry to burst your bubble, but it appears the Taiwanese do think their mid-range line-up could benefit from one new addition.

Codenamed Zara Mini and also known as the 301e, this fellow will be, you guessed it, a toned down, shrunken version of the Zara, which is itself a not so impressive handheld. Or so we think, because neither the Zara, nor the Zara Mini are official as of yet.

Anyhow, let’s keep an open mind and see what the Zara Mini could be about. First off, its design looks like a crossover between the Desire and One lines from a mile away, although there are a couple more extra visual elements “borrowed” from the former.

As far as specs go, the 301e bears an uncanny resemblance to the Desire L, unveiled last spring and available for sale only in Taiwan. Exactly like that modest mid-ranger, the Zara Mini is to come with a 4.3-inch 480 x 800 pix res display in tow, plus a 1 GHz dual-core CPU (though the make and model could definitely be different), 5 MP rear-facing camera and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

Oddly, the Zara Mini is tipped to double the on-board storage (from 4 to 8 gigs) while cutting the RAM in half (from 1 GB to just 512 MB). Another tweak will be the adding of dual-SIM support, whereas in terms of markets targeted by the newly leaked device China is reportedly topping the list.

Oh, yeah, one last thing. The Zara Mini is to tip the scales at 125 grams and measure 9.88 mm in thickness, which would be 7 grams and 1 mm more than the Desire L. Not cool, I know, but maybe the extra bulk will bring some extra battery juice with it (the L packs a meager 1,800 mAh ticker). Anyone interested? Anyone at all?
