Acer Iconia A3 10-inch tablet gets benchmarked, IFA unveiling is in the cards

Well, look who’s getting bullish about its Android prospects. It’s Acer, which seems to have gotten fed up with living in the shadows and might look to bathe in the spotlight come next week’s IFA.

Their number one showstopper is bound to be the Liquid S2 “phablet”, benchmarked not long ago with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, quad-core Snapdragon 800 CPU and, we’re guessing, 6-inch Full HD screen. But the S2 will not fly to Berlin all alone, as the GFX Bench database is today reminding the world an Iconia A3 10-inch tab is to be introduced soon as well.

Essentially confirmed by Acer execs already, the A3 had no specs attached to its name until a few hours ago. Now, we know the thing runs Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean (no surprises there), packs a secretive processor clocked at 1.2 GHz and sports a fairly modest 1,280 x 752 pixels resolution screen.

Granted, there’s nothing there that warrants a lot of attention from tech-savvy folks. Not yet, that is, or not before hearing of a price tag for the Iconia A3. Remember, the 7-inch A1 is itself modestly specced, but when you count in its pricing (roughly $170 nowadays with 16 GB of on-board storage), you get a tremendously solid deal. Almost a bargain.

On that note, what if Acer will charge $250 or even less for its upcoming 10-inch contender? Do you know of any other slate with similarly hefty screen real estate and competitive pricing? Exactly.

Before sliding off to sweet dream territory though, a friendly warning needs to be put into words. Namely, while the 1.2 GHz SoC seems covered in mystery, chances are it’s to be a fairly humble quad-core MediaTek MT8125, very similar to the one found inside the Iconia A1.

Don’t take that for granted just yet, though I can’t think of another CPU paired with a PowerVR SGX544MP GPU that Acer could use. Oh, well, the make or break element here is still the price point. Be wise, Acer, be wise.
