It hasn’t been six months since the launch of the Galaxy S4, and it looks like the Internet rumormill is already focused on Samsung’s next Galaxy flagship, the Galaxy S5.
The first rumor regarding the Galaxy S5 stated that the device would feature a 16MP camera with optical image stabilization. Originally, it was indicated that the Galaxy Note III, which is set to be unveiled next week, will feature OIS, but a shortage of the components means that this technology will now be used on the Galaxy S5, which will be launched sometime next year.
Today, an article on ET News, a well-known Korean technology website, mentioned that Samsung is planning to use a metallic chassis on the Galaxy S5. Allegedly, a prototype device with a metallic chassis has been designed and sent to Vietnam, where it will be mass-produced. Samsung is believed to be conducting a series of pre-production tests as it tries to figure out whether making a device with a metallic chassis is feasible, and if so, how to mitigate issues like radio interference and signal attenuation.
This isn’t the first time we’re hearing rumours of a Samsung flagship device that allegedly comes with a metallic chassis. Earlier this year, the Internet was rife with rumours of how the Galaxy S4 would feature a metallic chassis, and look how that turned out.
In an interview with CNET back in March, Y.H. Lee, executive vice president of Samsung’s mobile business, said that Samsung just doesn’t take aesthetic quality of a device into consideration, but also factors like the amount of time it takes to efficiently manufacture the product. He mentioned that this is the reason the Korean manufacturer chose to go with plastic for the Galaxy S4, as it is more feasible to make a device out of plastic than using metal.
In fact, that move worked out to Samsung’s favor at the end, as was demonstrated by the lengthy delays faced by HTC in getting the One out on store shelves. By the time the HTC One was finally launched, Samsung had already sold over 5 million Galaxy S4 units.
So, a Galaxy S5 that features a metallic chassis might not actually come to fruition, but then again, Samsung does have one of the best manufacturing facilities in the world. If the south Korean giant is able to figure out the logistics before the S5 goes into production, which is likely going to be somewhere around December, we might actually see a Galaxy device with a metallic design.
