Microsoft officially announced that it has seeded the RTM build to manufacturers yesterday, and less than a day later the build has leaked online.
The Chinese Enterprise x64 version of the Windows 8.1 RTM build has leaked and is now available on file-sharing sites. The 9600 build number coincides with earlier leaks, and has been confirmed as the legitimate RTM build.
Microsoft has already announced that it will not give MSDN and TechNet subscribers early access to the RTM build, and that they have to wait till October 18th to get access to the Windows 8.1 code-base. Antoine Leblond, a Microsoft spokesperson wrote on the Windows blog stating that the organization is “working with a limited set of partners who are building apps that will showcase the new functionality of Windows 8.1; however, we have nothing more to share at this time.”
The move has irked most of the development community, and most of them took to the official Windows blog to voice their complaints. One developer said, “How are we supposed to test our software for Windows 8.1? The day it will be automatically installed on users’ machines? So we—software developers—can take blame that applications don’t work on Windows 8.1?”
The RTM build features many new features, like the inclusion of Skype as the default messaging client, UI changes to the Start screen that allows for tiles of different sizes and Windows Phone-like menus for built-in software like Mail and Calendar. Current Windows 8 users will be able to download Windows 8.1 for free once it launches October 18th in the U.S.
