Ben Affleck is the next Batman; here's why that's a good, and bad thing

Director of award-winning films like*Argo, Gone Baby Gone,*and*Good Will Hunting*will portray the Caped Crusader AKA Batman in the next film.*

The news comes straight from Warner Bros. in the form of statements from production executive Greg Silverman, and director Zack Snyder. Affleck will play an older, wiser*Batman in the sequel to this year’s hit superhero film*Man of Steel.*Henry Cavill will reprise his role as Superman when the film releases in Summer 2015.

Zack Snyder on choosing Ben Affleck:

“Ben provides an interesting counter-balance to Henry’s Superman. He has the acting chops to create a layered portrayal of a man who is older and wiser than Clark Kent and bears the scars of a seasoned crime fighter, but retain the charm that the world sees in billionaire Bruce Wayne. I can’t wait to work with him.”

While Snyder and co. are predictably enthusiastic about Affleck’s role, fans of the superhero are against the move. They’ve started futile anti-Affleck e-movements on Facebook, and Twitter – just look at the*#BetterBatmanThanBenAffleck hashtag on Twitter for a taste of the negative sentiment.

The backlash is understandable; Ben Affleck is known more as a film director than an actor, mostly because he has never really truly impressed anyone with his acting roles. But then again, does anyone remember all the backlash against Heath Ledger being chosen to portray The Joker in Dark Knight Rises? We all know how that ended up: Ledger’s performance was the single best thing about*Dark Knight Rises, and much of the reason behind its popularity.



I say give Ben Affleck a chance. His titular role in the 2003 superhero film*Daredevil*did net positive reviews from critics. I have no doubt that he will do better in the next Man of Steel*film, especially considering the excellent team he’ll be working with.
