Samsung Galaxy S5 tipped for March 2014 launch in metal and plastic versions

It’s been all quiet on the Samsung Galaxy S5 front for the past month or so, with the once furious rumor mill toning down its churning, but now a new report has emerged out of Korea to muddy the waters and spark the controversies again.

According to hit-and-miss confidential sources close to ET News, Samsung is indeed gearing up for a premature Galaxy S rollout, most likely due to GS4 demand looking feeble. Thus, the S5 may enter production as early as January 2014, with a formal announcement coming a month later (possibly during or preceding MWC) and a commercial launch slated for March.

Remember, the big guy’s predecessor and one of Samsung’s current top dogs, the S4, has seen daylight on March 13, 2013, going up for grabs worldwide in late April. Then again, the S3 was only announced in May 2012 and started selling later that month, so ultimately GS5’s March 2014 release shouldn’t catch us completely off guard. And it might have nothing to do with S4 sales.

What’s truly intriguing (and surprising) at ET News’ report is it gives credence to the theory old Sam is working on two different versions of the S5, one more premium, rocking a metal frame and flexible AMOLED panel, and the other sporting a blander plastic body, plus non-curved screen.

Mind you, this isn’t the first time the speculation wind brings forth such a thesis, but since we’re closing in on the supposed production start, it’s all starting to look, well, plausible. Just don’t expect the flexible S5 to actually be flexible at the user’s end. If the rumors prove legit, the best case scenario is the display will resemble that on the Galaxy Round.

As usual, I’ve saved the best for last, as ET News hints at a massive 4,000 mAh battery giving the Galaxy S5 juice. Big number, though the forthcoming 5-incher (5.2?) may well need the kick, as a 64-bit octa-core Exynos CPU is tipped to run the hardware show.

Probably not in both variants though, so a Qualcomm-made quad-core Snapdragon 805 SoC is still in the cards for the plastic, non-flexible model. 3 gigs of RAM and a 16 MP rear-facing snapper are to wrap the spec sheet up with a nice little bow, albeit there’s no word on the cam touting optical image stabilization. Don’t worry, there’s still time.
