No PS4 game installs on external drives, internal HDD only

SCE Worldwide Studios President Shuhei Yoshida is well-known for using social media networks like Twitter to interact with everyday gamers and answer their questions, which fosters a multitude of devoted and loyal gamers across the world.

In one such Tweet, Yoshida reveals a surprising aspect regarding the PlayStation 4′s game installation functionality. Apparently gamers cannot install PS4 games onto external hard drives, and must instead utilize the console’s 500GB HDD instead.

This poses a somewhat troubling scenario for many gamers as hard disk space is occupied at a surprising pace, especially with next-gen titles which will no-doubt require a surprising sum of storage. The news comes shortly after Yoshida revealed that PS4 users can install full games onto the console, once again in a recent Tweet:

500 gigs may sound like a lot, and it will most likely be sufficient for most PS4 users, however the option to make use of an external HDD is a convenient measure that is offered by Microsoft’s Xbox One console.</span>

According to Albert Penello, the Xbox One features a non-replacable HDD, yet it has external HDD support via its USB 3.0 ports.

It will be interesting to see if Sony offers upgradeable internal hard disks–maybe a 1-2 TB option–to remedy this, as HD video content as well as the increasingly spacious next-gen titles can fill up 500GB’s pretty fast.

While the restriction on no external HDD installation support may seem like a drawback to some, it most likely will not be enough to tarnish Sony’s stalwart reputation and commendable lead in the next-gen war. It is a disadvantage and as time goes by Sony will become aware and most likely issue upgrade options, and it will be interesting to see the exact nature of the PS4′s storage options–i.e. if you can “move” digital content to an external flash drive or possibly store content on the cloud, etc.

Sony’s next-gen PlayStation 4 is scheduled to hit retail shelves on Nov. 15, 2013 for a price point of $399. For more information check out our recent PS4 coverage.
