New Mac mini RAM is not user upgradeable

Turns out the RAM modules are soldered in the new Mac mini.

It has been a considerably long time since the Mac mini was updated and Apple finally came through earlier this week when it unveiled the new Mac mini. Now there’s nothing to write home about as far as the exterior design is concerned since all of the changes have been made inside the hood. However the Mac mini now has better internals than before but there’s one caveat that*some users might not be too happy about.

It turns out that the RAM modules are not user upgradeable. Which means you simply can’t swipe out the RAM modules that the computer comes with and replace them with those you have purchased from somewhere else. This was previously possible but not anymore. The Mac mini does come with 8GB of RAM as standard and Apple offers an option to take it up to 16GB by paying an extra $200.

Macminicolo has found that the RAM modules are soldered inside the new Mac mini and therefore they can’t be swapped out. So upgrading RAM by purchasing cheap modules online is out of the question. Apple does offer the option to upgrade it to 16GB and that’s the maximum it will allow users to upgrade the RAM, it is not possible to go beyond that.

Freedom to upgrade the RAM as users see fit notwithstanding, the new Mac mini starts at $499 and is available for purchase right away from Apple’s retail stores, select resellers and its online store.
