Apple may not be interested in building an iMac with touchscreen display

Touchscreen all-in-ones are all the rage but Apple’s not interested it seems.

Apple’s new iMac with a 5K display comes after a long time that was filled with speculation about the future of the company’s all-in-one lineup. It is sticking around for sure and now that it brings the “world’s highest resolution display,” according to Apple, it offers even more value to professional users who prefer using the iMac for tasks such as 3D modeling, photo and video editing etc.

A question has been asked many times and never has there been a concrete response from Apple. Many would like to know if the company would go down the path that many PC manufacturers have chosen. What about an iMac with touchscreen? Many of us would certainly like to have that option and with iOS and OS X growing closer together in recent releases it seems that perhaps that might be an option for Apple in the long run.

It is possible that Apple may have already tried its hand with a touchscreen iMac internally. In an interview the company’s senior vice president of software engineering, Craig Federighi, remarks that the optimal user experience that Apple always pushes for might not be provided by an iMac with touchscreen display.

Federighi explains that Apple has spent considerable time building the “best trackpads we can,” which allows users to feel that their posture is relaxed while they’re used the iMac. They don’t necessary have to hunch forward in order to be able to tap on the display. He adds that “we’ve experimented with all the technology, but we found it just wasn’t good.” Federighi rounds it off by saying that “we’re not all that interested in building one.”

There you have it. Looks like building an iMac with touchscreen display isn’t at the top of Apple’s list of*priorities at this point in time. No one can say if the company will change its position on this in the future.
