Retina MacBook Air rumors mount once again

Countless rumors claim that a MacBook Air with Retina Display is on the cards for 2014, but is Apple really to take the leap?

Rumors about a Retina MacBook Air come on the heels of recent reports that a new 12-inch MacBook is being developed, which is going to be slimmer and lighter than existing Airs, and may also pack a high resolution display.

These rumors first started circulating a couple of years back. Even last year there was an endless stream, claiming that the 2013 MacBook Air lineup will come with Retina Displays. That didn’t happen though, Apple did release a refreshed lineup, but it only came with new Intel processors and a few tweaks. Apple hasn’t really made any radical changes to the MacBook Air since it first came out, the design is the same, and so if the display. It doesn’t come close to the pixel packing power found on its Retina MacBook Pros.

Its possible that Apple may seek to simplify the MacBook Air lineup by launching a new 12-inch model with Retina display. That would mean the existing 11.6 and 13.3-inch models will be wiped out. It may opt for a strategy it used when the first MacBook Pro with Retina Display came out. The existing models may receive a bump in specs, and may be sold at a lower price alongside the new 12-inch model. Supply chain sources suggest that the launch is scheduled for the second half of 2014.

One particular factor that Apple has to keep in consideration at all times is price. It has to leave a substantial difference between the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro lineups. To make this happen, it has to opt for cheaper components. The Air lineup is usually promoted for the portability and enhanced battery life it offers whereas the Pro lineup is aimed more towards professional users, so obviously the latter needs hardware to match those claims. It has been able to retain the price points of the Air lineup just because it has only focused on what’s really essential. That might not be the case with an entirely new product.

Rumors aside, Apple is yet to confirm its intention of launching a 12-inch Retina MacBook Air, or even updating the existing models with a Retina Display down the line. The $999 11.6-inch MacBook Air is the gateway to Apple’s notebooks. Its still comparatively expensive as opposed to Windows based notebooks that offer greater specs for lesser price, it would serve the company’s own interests to ensure that the bottom line isn’t raised.
