You need to offer great to “demand great” from your fans, and for once, Sony looks capable of reaching a wide stateside audience with its regularly outstanding but hard to come by gadgets.
It’s starting, ladies and gentlemen, it’s finally starting. Sony’s long overdue US offensive, which sees a pair of top-class Android devices actually reach a major carrier at a point in time they’re still mildly attractive.
Remember how long it took T-Mobile to pick up the Xperia Z and Z1, aka Z1S? And how we waited in vain for Verizon to do something about the gorgeous Z2? Well, they didn’t, but they’re making amends now by promptly scoring two Sony flagships.
The flagship smartphone and flagship smartwatch. The Xperia Z3, bizarrely rebranded as Z3v, and the aptly named SmartWatch 3. Even more bizarre about the Z3v is it actually comes with Z2’s exterior and the international Z3’s internals.

The whole thing is made more confusing by the fact the Z3 and Z2 are nearly identical hardware-wise, and they’re not that different aesthetically either. So basically, Big Red missed the ideal Z2 launch window, but intends to roll the 5.2 incher out anyway under a slightly tweaked name.
On the bright side, the Z3v does sport one key feature both the Z2 and standard Z3 lack – Qi wireless charging. Priced at a predictable $199.99 with two-year agreements, the KitKat-running, Full HD display-boasting, Snapdragon 801-packing handheld will go on sale October 23.
Meanwhile, the SmartWatch 3, Sony’s first wearable piece to ditch its proprietary OS for Android Wear, is without a specific release date at the moment, though we know it’ll begin shipping by the end of the month.
Nowhere near as good-looking as Motorola’s Moto 360, LG’s G Watch R or even the Asus ZenWatch, the Sony SmartWatch 3 doesn’t shine in the features department either, carrying your customary slew of sensors and connectivity options, a now standard 1.2 GHz Snapdragon 400 chip, 512 MB RAM and 420 mAh battery.
The touchscreen is fairly tiny too, at 1.6 inches, and overall, we’re not seeing anything to justify Verizon’s $250 price tag. Oh, well, that’s bound to go down to $200 soon enough, and some sort of bundle promotions tagging the Xperia Z3v are near guarantees as well.
Too bad Verizon was the only service provider invited to these two’s US launch party, and Z3 Compact’s carrier support remains up in the air. But there’s still time.
