Lenovo adds five new Android and Windows members to Yoga Tablet family

Two run Android 4.4 KitKat, two Windows 8.1, and the fifth KitKat again, with a projector built in for kicks.

Unlike the instantly successful Yoga lineup of high-end convertible Windows laptops, the low-cost, low-end Android tablets took some time to get used to. Or rather they took some time to grow into the gadgets worthy of the Yoga family name.

Granted, the just-announced Yoga Tablet 2 roster is still nowhere near as versatile and productive as those expensive, premium bendable notebooks. Once again, there are no physical keyboards included, and the kickstands are largely the same.

With good and bad, namely a small dose of malleability and stellar battery life and bulk respectively. Of course, Lenovo insists the incorporated “accessories” are greatly improved, but aside from being slightly larger, the upgrades aren’t immediately perceptible.

Which is not what we can say about the display and processors on the 8 and 10 incher. Bye-bye, disappointing pixel counts and sub-par performance, hello, 1,920 x 1,200 screens and Intel Atom chips. The same features are found on the Windows 8.1-running Yoga Tablet 2 flavors, though sadly, models equipped with Microsoft’s extra-productive OS seem to be costlier than Android KitKat versions.

Namely, the Win Yoga Tablet 2 10-inch is $400 and up, $100 north of its Android counterpart’s starting price. Then again, the bigger Windows 8.1 slate oddly includes a keyboard as standard, whereas the Android has the option to add it to the ensemble. Presumably, at $100.

As for 8 inchers, the Google-powered little guy costs $250 and is available now, and the Win 8.1 is “coming soon” at an unknown price.

But wait, there’s more. If you’re into wacky, gigantic gear conceived by the likes of Ashton Kutcher with a seemingly pointless built-in appendage, that is. Yes, the Yoga Tablet 2 Pro is the textbook definition of unconventional, sporting a massive 13-inch screen, no keyboard, but an integral pico projector.

You probably remember when Samsung experimented with such weird combos, putting projectors on tiny phones even, but surely, we’re past that phase. Well, Lenovo isn’t, and to crank up the ludicrous, they also encourage future Yoga Tablet 2 Pro owners to use the thing in “Hang” mode. I.e. hanged on a wall… or coat rack.

Craziness overload, yet the ginormous Android’s spec sheet reads like the wet dream of any Google-loving nerd: 13.3-inch 2,560 x 1,440 IPS display, 15-hour battery, fourth-gen quad-core Intel Atom SoC, 2 GB RAM, 8 MP rear camera, 32 GB internal storage, 8-watt sound system with stereo speakers and subwoofer. Wow, this truly is a unique piece of equipment.
