5K iMac can't double as a standalone display

Such a shame that Apple didn’t update its Thunderbolt Display.

As you might have heard by now earlier in the week Apple took to the stage at One Infinite Loop in Cupertino, California to unveil some new products. Apart from launching the two new iPads the company also unveiled a new iMac. The all-in-one has new internals under the hood and its biggest selling point is the 27-inch 5K display.

The whole computer is actually a lot cheaper than most standalone 4K displays available in the market but there is one caveat, it can not be used as a standalone display. Which means that even if you purchase this $2499 computer you will not be able to hook up a laptop to it in order to use it as a secondary display.

This was noted by Matthew Panzarino of TechCrunch. It is believed that this caveat is due to the custom hardware used in the iMac for its 5K display which may not make it compatible with other devices that want to use it as an external display.

Apple already offers a*standalone display, the Thunderbolt Display to be precise, but sadly it has not been updated since 2011. Many would have thought that the company will bring over the same 5K technology to that*product as well but so far that has not happened.*Maybe next year.
