Danganronpa, the video game about high school students killing each other, is now receiving a stage play adaptation. Are you ready for some live action punishments?
Danganronpa the Stage will be produced by the company Cornflakes with supervision by Kazutaka Kodaka, the scenario writer of the original game, and will take place from October 29 to November 3 in Shinjuku’s Nippon Seinenkan Grand Hall.
Cornflakes has also released a teaser video revealing the first two actors. The protagonist Makoto Naegi will be played by Kanata Hongou (Ryoma from The Prince of Tennis’s live-action movie), while the dimwitted fortune teller Hagakure will be played by Akira Ishida from the manzai duo Non Style, who is making this his debut as a stage actor.
The story of Danganronpa follows fifteen incredibly talented high school students who are all trapped inside one of the world’s most prestigious high schools, where the only way to escape is to kill someone. Every time someone is murdered, the other students must investigate and hold a trial to discover the culprit. If they catch the murderer, that person is “punished”, but if they choose the wrong person as the culprit, the real murderer gets to leave, and everyone else is “punished” (which is a nice way of saying “executed”).
While no one can doubt the popularity of Danganronpa, a play adaptation does raise some questions. After some fans criticized the rushed pace of last summer’s anime adaptation, how will Cornflakes fit the story into one sitting?
More importantly, how in the world will they reenact a talking teddy bear executing people onstage?
