Popular chat app has a $120 million quarter.
Popular chat app Line continues to be a growing source of revenue for its parent company.
Line Corporation announced today that its chat app had brought the company $120 million in revenue through the sale of stickers and in-app purchases. In total, Line brought in $338 million in revenue for its parent company *this year.
In Asia the popularity and market dominance of chat apps is aligned with geo-politics. While TenCent’s WeChat dominates the competition in sheer market numbers, the fact that it hails from China limits its popularity in Taiwan, Japan and Korea. Despite aggressive marketing by TenCent in Taiwan, users in the Republic of China haven’t embraced the app in a substantial way.
Line Corporation has yet to publish the actual earnings from Line. When asked a company representative told VR-Zone that the information has yet to be made public, and did not specify if that would ever happen. However, profitability from chat apps is not entirely unprecedented. In China, Tencent reported a first quarter profit in 2013 of $645 million which it credited largely to the growth of WeChat.
