Google’s latest hardware offering is a $999 video conferencing system that is powered by Google Hangouts.
Google launched the Chromebox for meetings bundle today that consists of an Asus Chromebox, speaker, microphone, HD camera along with a remote. The system uses Google Hangouts for video conferences, and can also work with other solutions like Vidyo and UberConference for calls.
Google VP for Product Management Caesar Sengupta said that Chromebox for meetings includes solutions that Google itself developed for its in-house meetings. He mentioned that using Hangouts as the backend for the video conferences allows a lot of freedom for users to connect from a wide range of devices. All that is required to join a meeting will be a device that can run Hangouts. Chromebox for meetings can simultaneously show 15 video streams, with all video streams automatically encrypted.
The Asus Chromebox that Google is bundling with Chromebox for meetings is a higher-end offering of the same device that was unveiled yesterday. This variant includes an Intel Core i7 processor, HDMI and DisplayPort outs, four USB 3.0 ports, dual-band Wi-Fi connectivity along with a standard Ethernet connector. Google has mentioned that Chromeboxes from Dell and HP would be available in the coming months. The camera included in the bundle is a Logitech 1080p offering, and the remote comes with a full QWERTY keyboard at the back.
Google will not charge anything for using the service for the first year, but users have to fork over $250 annually from the second year for each Chromebox for meetings. The bundle is available in the U.S. today, and will be making its way to Australia, Canada, France, Japan, New Zealand, Spain and U.K. soon.
