Sony has developed a new sensor that allows players to keep track of their tennis game performance using a smartphone/tablet app.
Health trackers and sensors are all the hype nowadays. Just strap one on your wrist and voila! You can keep track of your workout progress in real time on your smartphone. But Sony may have something more specific in store with that concept however, with their development of a new tennis game-based sensor.
The Smart Tennis Sensor (SSE-TN1) looks like a simple, button-like device. It is installed at the base of a tennis racket handle, and keeps track of the user’s performance by measuring various stats that is related to each shot or swing made by the player. The sensor relays all the data it receives to a smartphone or tablet via Bluetooth, analyzing it and displays various statistics using the included special app.
The app for the Smart Tennis Sensor works for Android 4.1+ and iOS 6.1+ devices. Sony plans to make the Smart Tennis Sensor available to sports specialty stores across Japan, with an estimated price that is equivalent to about $170.00.

It could also analyze the speed of the racket’s swing, as well as the ball’s average spin state for each hit made. In addition, it also uses the phone’s camera in snyc with the sensor, so players can see their actual performance in the game, as well as the statistics of all the shots that they made in real time.
