Nvidia is readying an even faster variant of the GTX Titan that is based on the GK110 core.
Nvidia is set to launch a new version of the GTX Titan, dubbed the GeForce GTX Titan Black Edition, sometime in the first quarter. The card itself will feature a fully unlocked GK110 GPU core, with 2880 CUDA cores, 240 TMUs and 48 ROPs on a 384-bit memory bus interface.
The core configuration of the GTX Titan Black Edition is similar to the GTX 780 Ti, but it is set to come with more video memory and is said to be clocked higher. It will also likely come with a new cooler. Whereas the GTX 780 Ti featured 3 GB GDDR5 memory, the GTX Titan Black Edition will come with 6 GB GDDR5 memory at 6.0 GHz.
To be launched for $999, the GTX Titan Black Edition is too costly for even the most ardent of gamers, and is total overkill. The GTX 780 Ti, which is available for $699, is more than adequate for the most demanding games. Furthermore, Nvidia is said to be launching its next-generation GeForce 800 series cards running on the new Maxwell architecture by the end of the first quarter of 2014. As such, it does not make much sense to buy a high-end card that uses the outdated GK110 GPU core for $999.
Cards based on the Maxwell architecture will feature more advanced visuals along with better energy efficiency. Nvidia is also said to launch a high-end Maxwell card based on a new 20 nm manufacturing process, which would be available sometime later this year.
