Think 4K is high resolution? Japan’s national broadcaster, NHK, has just tested 8K.
The new 4K display standard might make your 1080p HD TV look grainy, but the Japanese are actually already aiming beyond this point. In fact, the NHK has already unveiled last year their plans to adopt the next 8K display standard, and just last Monday, the broadcaster was finally able to successfully broadcast a signal using this “Super Hi-Vision” resolution at their farthest record distance yet.
The transmission experiment was made at NHK’s Hitoyoshi branch, in Japan’s Kumamoto Prefecture. The compressed broadcast signal was sent on a single UHF channel, and was successfully received by a relay station that is around 27 km away from the signal’s source.
For a direct comparison, a standard 8K image or video has a resolution of about 7,680 by 4,320 pixels, which is about four times the resolution of a 4K image, and at least sixteen times that of a Full HD (1080p) image.
The previous transmission experiment (which was also the very first 8K signal broadcast attempt in the entire world) was made last May 2012. The 8K broadcast signal came from the NHK Science and Technology Research Laboratories, and was able to travel at a maximum distance of 4.2 km.
With the relatively early success of these transmission experiments, the technical adoption and implementation of the 8K standard in the near-future might well be looked forward to at a shorter time than expected.
