Motorola thinks that the Moto G might not be accessible to everyone, and is considering making a $50 handset.
In an interview with TrustedReviews, Motorola CEO Dennis Woodside said that a $50 smartphone might not be that far away. “In much of the world, $179 is a lot of money so there’s a big market at a price point of less than $179,” he said in reference to the fact that while the Moto G is seen by most in countries like the U.S. as a budget device, it is a mid-tier handset in India, where handsets running Android 4.2 Jelly Bean are available for as low as $100.
Coincidentally, the Moto G is headed to India, with Motorola announcing that further details about the launch of the device in the country would be forthcoming on February 5. The Moto G price would be set at around $200 – $220 mark in the country, which sees it going head to head against Samsung’s wildly successful Galaxy Grand. While the Moto G comes with far better hardware to any other device in this category, Motorola would have a tough time marketing the device in the country.
Woodside confirmed that Motorola would launch an even more affordable device in the near future. “We’re going to look at that and just delivering on that value promise is super important. I mean why can’t these devices be $50?” While he did mention that work is underway on such a device, he failed to provide any concrete details regarding the hardware that this device would feature, or a tentative release date.
In addition to a budget device, Woodside announced that more customization features would soon be heading to the Moto Maker customization utility. Currently, users can choose between various front and back color accents and materials, but Woodside has said that customizable screen sizes and added functionality would be available to users, which could include selecting the amount of memory, storage, connectivity, battery and even the camera quality.
Having a mobile with such customizable hardware could be a game changer. Users looking to get a high-end device with a smaller screen size can customize their device accordingly. Currently, most manufacturers are going with a 5-inch screen size or higher on their flagship handsets. If you’re looking to get a similar handset in a smaller form factor, you would have to settle for less than stellar hardware. With Moto Maker, you would now be able to customize hardware as well as the screen size of your device according to your needs.
However, Motorola’s customizable Moto Maker initiative, while interesting, will be fraught with many challenges. Manufacturing a device that is tailored to a user’s looking will surely add a lot of time. It remains to be seen as to how Motorola will tackle such issues, but it is a bold undertaking nevertheless.
