Adobe site leaks details about 'Lightroom' for iPad

A cloud subscription service for Adobe’s upcoming mobile ‘Lightroom’ application briefly appeared on the company’s website this week, 9to5mac reports.

9to5mac notes that sometime this week, the Adobe website inadvertently leaked details related to an upcoming mobile version of its Lightroom image editing software.

While Adobe pulled the available Lightroom mobile subscription from the stock of its online store as soon as it was contacted for further comment, at least one customer was able to purchase such a subscription first, and made a screenshot available.

Adobe’s interest in creating a version of the Lightroom software for Apple’s iPad is publicly known, thanks to a prototype version which Adobe demonstrated in early 2013.

In addition to the application that Adobe will launch for mobile products, it will be rolling out a cloud service in order to synchronize files between machines running Lightroom, with the added benefit of saving storage space on devices with limited capacity.

As evidenced by Adobe’s link, this subscription will be equal to some $99.00 a year. While this may seem like a generous fee, photographers may find the functionality very useful.

Adobe’s photo editing software will be capable of directly making changes to the enormous .RAW files from digital SLR cameras, which can quickly accumulate to a size of many gigabytes. Many tablets do not contain enough memory to make local storage of such files feasible.

9to5mac notes that a chat representative from Adobe implied that the functionality of mobile Lightroom will be comparable to those versions currently available for regular computers.

Given the processor intensive nature of photo editing, especially on data intensive RAW file formats, a functional mobile version of this product is a rather impressive innovation, and should go to even further prove the usefulness of ‘post-PC’ devices like tablets.
