Today in unconnected, unexceptional Samsung Galaxy news: another derivative variant of the S5 is official, so is a low-end smartphone with a Super AMOLED display, and whispers of an imminent Android 5.0 update for the Note 4 are about to turn into rumblings.
It’s no secret Samsung likes to keep busy in the mobile landscape, at the risk of occasionally over-hyping certain products, or outright irking with a far too ample roster. Take the just-announced Galaxy S5 Plus and Core Max.
What exactly is their objective? To further dilute the Galaxy brand? Increase confusion among end users, and push them in Apple’s arms? If that’s the case, then mission accomplished, Sammy. Otherwise, why the world needed another slightly improved GS5 is beyond us.
And when we say slightly improved, we mean it. A carbon copy of the original on the outside, the deceptively dubbed Plus replaces the on-board quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor with an S805. Clocked at the same exact speed as before, 2.5 GHz, so not quite as zippy as the 2.7 GHz unit found inside the GNote 4.
Still, the raw performance ante is theoretically upped, so while everything else is the same old, same old, 2 GB RAM included, the S5 Plus is on paper a “new” product. One discreetly unveiled in Netherlands, and likely to stay exclusive to a handful of European markets for obvious reasons.
Meanwhile, the Galaxy Core Max is the second recent low-end Samsung handheld to sport an AMOLED screen, after the Galaxy Ace Style LTE. But don’t expect to be blown away by the fresh 4.8 incher’s panel, which comes with 2012-reminiscent 960 x 540 pixels resolution.
The rest of the (mediocre) features include an unnamed quad-core 1.2 GHz processor, 1 GB RAM, 8 and 5 MP cameras and 8 GB internal storage space, with the plentiful Chinese market the phone’s main target.
It’s not all bad underwhelming on the Samsung announcement front however, as a tweet sent out by the company’s mobile HQ suggests Android 5.0 for the Galaxy Note 4 is right around the corner. Of course, the Note 4 has to debut on store shelves worldwide first, and members of the Nexus family should no doubt be treated to Lollipop software makeovers before it.
But seeing 5.0 Lollipop on a non-stock Android by the time Santa comes to town is not out of the question. Presumably. Hopefully.
