Microsoft’s transition of Nokia Windows Phones to own-brand Lumias is nearing completion, according to The Verge, and the new Microsoft Lumia name could become official in a matter of weeks.
Brace yourselves, the Microsoft Lumias are coming. Technically, they’ve been around for a while, as Redmond closed its Nokia takeover back in April, and since then, we’ve seen handhelds such as the 630, 930, 530, 830 and 730 roll out to end users.
But for the sake of tradition, and perhaps to signal the old Nokia management team was in charge of producing all these smartphones, they carried the Nokia Lumia moniker, including pasted all over their framework.
The marketing efforts however rarely stressed these were Nokia products, instead the Lumia brand being pushed much more aggressively than before. And by the time Santa comes to town, it’s going to be like Nokia never existed.
Of course, Microsoft didn’t swallow whole the once mighty Finland-based company, so part of it is going about its mapping and network infrastructure business. A wild rumor even made the rounds a while back, according to which Nokia was looking to hire experienced Android engineers and developers to try a mobile do-over.
If true, though we seriously doubt it, that’s clearly down the line, so for the foreseeable future, the only devices containing traces of Nokia DNA will be Microsoft Lumias. When should you expect the first Microsoft-only branded phone to see daylight? Well, the Lumia roster is in dire need of a new hero, and the 730 and 830 hardly fit the description.
So, don’t be surprised if an ultra-slim-bezeled Lumia 1020 or 1520 sequel lands in time for Christmas. Hopefully, with a top-of-the-line PureView rear-facing camera, Full or maybe Quad HD display, quad-core Snapdragon 805 punch and at least 2 GB RAM. Sure enough, with pre-installed Windows Phone 8.1 software. You go, Microsoft, and never give up, Nokia.
