Last-minute iPad Air 2 rumors call for October 24 launch in limited quantities

Meanwhile, the utopian 12-inch Retina MacBook Air*is a longer and longer shot for a rollout by the end of the year, and a 27-inch Retina iMac is widely expected to debut in the spotlight tomorrow.

Back when its yearly product roadmap merely included one iPhone model and an iPad, guessing the protagonists of Apple’s rare keynotes was far from detective work. But everything has changed in recent years, after Cupertino’s lineup diversity increase, and the dive in new categories has made things that much harder to predict beforehand.

Not even MacBook and iMac refreshes are what they used to be, with the former for instance tipped to soon welcome a new, higher-resolution 12-inch member. Not too soon though, at least not according to Recode and controversial KGI analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

Both sources claim the elusive MacBook Air with Retina Display is in the pipeline, but it’s not ready for a coming out party yet. Digitimes sustains the contrary, going so far as to assert production is underway, with a crank-up of mass-manufacturing scheduled for November.

Clearly, Recode has a better track record and higher credibility than the Taiwanese publication, so let’s move on. To fresh iPad Air 2 speculation calling for a speedy turnaround of just over a week. Yes, the spanking new 9.7 incher will break cover tomorrow, October 16, and could go on sale on the 24th, according to an inside source of Mac Rumors.

Based on the word of Ming-Chi Kuo however, supply may be scarce at first, with an estimated 7 to 9 million units prepped for launch wave 1. The anti-reflective screen coating is reportedly the cause of assembly woes, and iPad Air’s follow-up could be hard to come by all through the holidays.

Last but not least, Kuo anticipates the presence of an upgraded 27-inch iMac all-in-one desktop computer alongside the iPad Air 2 on the Cupertino Town Hall Theater stage in less than 24 hours, and he doesn’t rule out there not being an iPad mini 3 on the horizon. Not closeby, at least.

As far as this iMac goes, the technical pièce de résistance is bound to be a pixel-rich display with a resolution circling 5K. Yes, that’s at least 5,000 horizontal pixels, with 6,400 x 3,600 leading the suspect list at the moment. It’s a sure thing then, whatever Apple has in store for tomorrow’s press gathering, it’s going to be one heck of a launch party.
