On paper, because the reality of things surpassed Cupertino’s wildest dreams and Samsung’s most horrible nightmares right off the bat.
First, the 10 million milestone was crossed with ease during the opening weekend of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus in limited global markets. Soon after, the two reportedly hit 20 mil, and the figure may have already doubled, thanks to eager Chinese buyers.
Of course, we can’t talk of actual sales just yet, as the 6 and 6 Plus are still stuck on pre-order in the Middle Kingdom. But once the shipping ball gets rolling, crossing 40, 50, maybe even 60 mil sounds like a walk in the park.
According to Digitimes, the mind-blowing number previously posted by e-commerce giant Jingdong has increased twofold after adding pre-orders taken by the nation’s leading three wireless carriers in the equation.
The grand total thus circles the 20 million mark, and, we’re guessing, at least 10 million extra units will be required to meet the initial demand come Friday. If Apple can procure them, that is, as Canaccord Genuity analyst Michael Walkley conducted a survey of America’s “big four” service providers, finding inventory shortages and long waiting times across the board, most prominently as far as the 6 Plus is concerned.
Yet as hard as the bendy 5.5 incher has been to obtain, the giant still snatched the silver medal in September and October sales on AT&T, Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile. Wonder who the champion is? That shouldn’t be too hard to guess.
