Fancy a smartwatch that can morph into an actual phone? Fund the .klatz

90 percent done already, this neat, minimalistically designed, long-lasting smart “bracelet” needs just $140k more to materialize.

Everybody wants a piece of the wearable market. Apple, Samsung, LG, Motorola, Asus, even no-name hardware manufacturers based in China… or Ukraine. Of course, not all obscure, minuscule companies can afford to build a fancy smartwatch without outside financial support, especially when said smartwatch is as high-end and pretentious as the Klatz.

Technically, the name is .klatz, but for obvious reasons, we’re just going to refer to it as the Klatz. Not Klutz, Klatz. Uninspired name and unproven manufacturer track record aside, this timepiece is quite attractive.

First and foremost, because in addition to all the conventional smartwatch use cases, it can also double as a handset that you can easily unlatch from your wrist and make private voice calls with. Alas, the Klatz is virtually useless when not synched to an Android device or iPhone, but on the bright side, support includes Android 4.1 and, soon enough, Windows Phone.

Not too shabby, and perhaps best of all, the unique form factor allowed Klatz’s creators to equip it with a massive 600 mAh battery, good for 10 days in “normal mode” and one month (!!!) with energy-saving settings.

In comparison, the Apple Watch is rumored to pack a 320 mAh or so cell, and the recently announced Samsung Gear S barely features a 300 mAh juicer.

Now, sure, the part about the bracelet/wristwatch seamlessly converting into a, well, smartphone in need is what helps the Klatz stand out from the crowd at first glance. Under the surface though, it’s the record-breaking battery life that could turn it into a box-office hit, so maybe the architects of the wearable piece should insist a little more on that.

Also, on choice, as they plan to offer the thing in four sizes and multiple colors, starting at $99 a pop. That’s $99 if you back the project today, through Indiegogo, because once Klatz hits retail, the price ante will be upped to $149.

Interestingly enough, Indiegogo’s convenient flexible funding option isn’t ticked this time, so if $140,000 aren’t raised by November 17, the developers don’t get a penny. Way to show spunk, guys, and for all our readers tempted to file the Klatz under never-going-to-happen concepts, the product showcased in the promotional clip is a “90 percent” completed prototype.

With or without you therefore, this should come into being next year. At which point you’re going to hate yourselves for not endorsing it before it became cool.
