It’s (almost) official, LG’s “full circle” G Watch sequel hits the streets midway through next month for an undisclosed price that will however no doubt make the rectangular first-gen feel affordable.
Until the Apple iWatch comes to possibly propel wearable devices into the mainstream tech world, early adopters of “wrist-worn smartphones” have two choices. Either go square and cheap, or round and spend a small fortune on a timepiece.
Not an easy call, but if money ain’t an issue, the beautiful LG G Watch R and Motorola Moto 360 should definitely be near the top of your holiday shopping lists. Technically, the 360 starts at $250, which isn’t quite prohibitive.
Yet metallic versions are $300 and up, and we can’t stress enough how sturdy and handsome those feel and look. Meanwhile, LG left out the specific retail cost information regarding the G Watch R during its recent announcement, which in itself is ominous news.
And now The Wall Street Journal has it on good authority the “distinctive” Android Wear gizmo will be pricier than its lackluster predecessor. Mind you, that’s pricier than the G Watch at the time of its debut, so over $230, not just over $200.
Okay, so it’s still possible the G Watch R retails for $250, right? Sure, but if we were you, we wouldn’t hold our breaths. LG’s very own German division unintentionally spilled the beans not long ago, hinting at €300. So all in all, the stateside magic number is likely $300. Ouch!
The silver lining (yes, there is one) is that, again according to WSJ, LG will be pulling off quite the impressive turnaround. Namely, a month and a half between G Watch R’s formal intro and its commercial launch. That’s how it’s done, Motorola.
Unfortunately, October 14, which is the rumored D-Day, could well see the chic, retro, round-faced smartwatch go on sale in limited quantities in one or two markets around the world. Or it could mark a wide-scale global release. Only time will tell.
