New Moto X, new Moto G and Moto Hint unveiled, Moto 360 available at last

Despite everyone that’s someone in the tech décor traveling to Berlin for IFA, Motorola has stayed true to its American roots, taking the wraps off the “new” Moto X, new Moto G and Moto Hint, as well as the “old” Moto 360 in Chicago.

On the right track in the low-cost, mid-range smartphone space after the first-gen Moto G hit, soon-to-be Lenovo subsidiary Motorola wants a piece of the high-end action too. Enter the second-generation Moto X, rumored to be called the X+1 but ultimately branded simply as the “new” Moto X.

Priced at a reasonable $99.99 with two-year contracts on “select” US carriers, and $499.99 unlocked, the 5.2 incher amazingly improves on its predecessor in all the right ways. The screen is not only larger, it’s higher-res too, at 1,080p.

And then you have a substantially beefier quad-core 2.5 GHz Snapdragon 801 chip, much more capable 13 MP rear-facing camera and, perhaps most important, a sturdier, neater build. Wrapped in aluminum, much like Samsung’s Galaxy Alpha and Note 4, the new Moto X feels amazing in one’s hand, especially when backed by wood or leather.

Speaking of, the customizable Moto Maker tool is to get a refresh in the coming weeks, albeit we have some bad news on that front too. Verizon and AT&T will reportedly be the only stateside carriers to offer custom-made leathery X slabs in the near future.

Switching our attention to Motorola’s comfort zone, the low-cost niche, we’re happy to report the new Moto G goes for $179.99 sans contractual obligations. Yes, goes, as in it’s already available. With a larger, 5-inch 720p display, 8 MP rear camera, microSD support and pre-loaded stock Android 4.4 KitKat.

So yeah, it’s more of an incremental upgrade, but darn, is it cheap.

Which is not what we can say about the Moto Hint, the Bluetooth headset of tomorrow. Much more than an accessory, the minuscule wireless phone “controller” lets you check notifications, make and receive calls and send text messages with no hands. Just your voice.

Really neat concept, excellent execution, but $149.99? Thanks, but no thanks.

Last but not least, the Moto 360 smartwatch, first unveiled, um, a decade ago, is finally up for grabs via motorola.com, Google Play and Best Buy. Price? $249.99 in leather/suede, or $299.99 with metal starting “later this fall”. Not too shabby, Motorola, not too shabby.
