Asus’ Chromebox makes it easier for users to access the Chrome OS. The base model in the series is available for just $179, and features most of the hardware features that are seen on Samsung’s Series 3 Chromebox, which retails for $329. Asus’ version retains the same form factor as Samsung’s offering, but is more understated in terms of the overall design.
The Asus Chromebox has hardware similar to that of the latest Chromebooks, like the Acer C720. It comes with a 1.4GHz dual-core Haswell-based Celeron 2955U processor, 2GB of RAM, 16 GB SSD, which is what all devices running Chrome OS feature (other than the Chromebook Pixel, which has a 32 GB SSD), dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11n, Bluetooth 4.0 and an SD card reader. In terms of connectivity, the Chromebox has four USB 3.0 ports, HDMI out and a DisplayPort out.
Asus will offer higher-end configurations of the Chromebox, with users having the ability to select between a 1.7GHz Core i3-4010U and a 2.1GHz Core i7-4600U along with 4 GB RAM over two DIMM slots.
