In the wake of the Chinese government banning 38 anime and manga titles from being streamed online, including Attack on Titan, it was announced that the planned screening of the anime during the*Shanghai International Film Festival in China was abruptly cancelled.
The screening of the anime, which was supposed to be part of the festival’s Japanese Film Week, was initially inspected and approved by the Chinese government, however,*because of the recent bans, the film fest’s committee have been abruptly informed and thus cancelled the screening.
China has recently banned 38 anime, including Attack on Titan, Psycho-Pass, High School DXD, Parasyte, and Death Note* for “encouraging*juvenile delinquency, glorify violence and include sexual content”. The cancellation of the screening, unfortunate as it may be, only comes natural as the 38 anime are not allowed to be shown, streamed, or screened in Chinese shores. The recent blacklist has been criticized not only from non-Chinese anime fans, but also from local*anime fans as the government has been accused of being “Anti-Japanese” and many have theorized that*the bans are more of a political move rather than a cultural one*as tensions between China and Japan are on the rise because of the recent territorial disputes between China and Japan, the Philippines, and Vietnam.
