A new report today carries a remark allegedly made by Apple design chief Jony Ive to his colleagues.
For the past few months it has been incessantly rumored that Apple is working on a smartwatch. Word on the street is that this device is going to be called the iWatch. Recent reports suggest that Apple might finally announce its first wearable device alongside the new iPhones on September 9th. There has been no confirmation from Apple on this as yet.
There have also been numerous reports about Apple trying to hire talent from Swiss watchmakers, who lead the world as far as horology is concerned. Some have fended off its advancements while some have jumped ship. This is just one of the reasons why the world is so anxious to see Apple’s spin on the smartwatch.
The New York Times ran a report in which it looks at the overall wearable market and speculates on how Apple’s entry would shake things up. It also includes a quote that was allegedly made by Apple design chief Jony Ive, apparently the scribe heard it from another Apple designer.
“According to a designer who works at Apple, Jonathan Ive, Apple’s design chief, in bragging about how cool he thought the iWatch was shaping up to be, gleefully said Switzerland is in trouble — though he chose a much bolder term for “trouble” to express how he thought the watchmaking nation might be in a tough predicament when Apple’s watch comes out.”
If this is indeed true then it looks like at least the company’s design head is pretty much satisfied with how the iWatch has shaped up. But the company might underestimate Swiss watchmakers which comprise of some of the most well known and sought after brands. For some people its a matter of status symbol to wear pieces from the likes of Rolex, Jaeger Le-Coultre and Vacheron Constantin. Its unlikely that those customers would give up their pieces for the iWatch, but we’ll have to wait and see how much of an impact Apple’s new wearable device has on this market.
