iOS 8 coming to existing iPhones and iPads on September 17

The latest version of Apple’s mobile operating system will go live for existing devices two days before the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are set to go on sale.

Amid the excitement around the announcement of the bigger iPhones and Apple’s first smartwatch, the Cupertino giant revealed that iOS 8 will go live for existing iPhones and iPads on September 17. The update will be compatible with the*the iPhone 4S, 5, 5s, 5c and the iPad 2, iPad 3rd and 4th generation, iPad Air, and all iPad Mini models, in addition to the fifth-generation iPod Touch.

iOS 8 was previewed for the first time back in June, and is set to make iOS more functional and flexible than ever before. It will bring features like actionable notifications, widgets in the notification*shade, a new predictive text keyboard and support for third-party keyboard, inter-app communication, self-destructing photos, voice messaging, and an improved email experience.

iOS 8 also includes HealthKit, an app that will aggregate health and fitness data from third-party apps in a centralized location and will likely integrate deeply with the Apple Watch. Furthermore, it will enable third-party apps to use the Touch ID fingerprint sensor, offer quick access to favorite contacts through the multitasking menu, and also come with Handoff, a feature that will let iPhone owners accept calls on a Mac or iPad, among other things.
