For many a tech aficionado, IFA 2014 might as well wrap up (very) early, since the only announcement that counts just came in.
Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the Samsung Galaxy Note 4, the sole Android soldier that could possibly fend off the iPhone 6 army this fall. But wait, there’s more. A revolutionary, one-of-a-kind, somewhat gimmicky spin-off of the standard Note 4 is also introduced.
It’s called the Galaxy Note Edge (not the Note 4 Edge, mind you), and it’s the first mass-produced device to take advantage of the much lauded, futuristic Youm technology. Before you even think it, no, the Note Edge isn’t a fully flexible handheld capable of curling up into a ball in your pockets to free up precious space.
We may be living the “future”, but we’re not quite there yet. Instead, what this pioneer does is wrap the conventional display around an edge of the phone (the right one, to be exact), cranking up the usable real estate while not touching on the physical dimensions and adding a sort of an innovative secondary screen zone.
A tiny, narrow zone in the form of a strip, but the sky is the limit as to the usability and productivity of said “secondary” display. And yes, for the time being there aren’t as many handy, functional use cases as we’d like, but give it a few months. A year, tops.
That said, be prepared to sit in long lines to get a piece of the Note Edge action “later this fall”, and crack open the piggy banks. The unconventional phablet is going to be hard to come by and mighty expensive.
Good thing the “basic” GNote 4, while nowhere near as groundbreaking, brings a healthy enough set of upgrades over its predecessor to probably turn around Samsung’s stagnant financials of late.
By far the greatest, neatest, coolest tweak sees the S Pen-supporting gadget at last adopt metallic elements in its construction, albeit we’re merely talking the frame, a la the Galaxy Alpha. Then, you have your customary share of incremental improvements to everything from screen resolution, processing speed, cameras and sensors, all of which are detailed in this exhaustive list of features:
