HTC reportedly snubs smartwatch trend, Intel and Fossil dive right in

Debunking frantic recent speculation, and even what looked like a blatant video exposé, HTC is allegedly wary of plunging in perilous smartwatch waters, which is great news for Intel and Fossil, nowhere near as fearful to take a chance on wearables.

So you think things are bound to quiet down on the smartwatch front now that Motorola has launched the beautiful Moto 360, Sony the SmartWatch 3, LG the G Watch R, Asus the ZenWatch and Samsung the Gear S?

Oh, you are so naïve. The best may be yet to come, courtesy of Apple, and if you’re into fashion, you might want to watch out for what Fossil has in store as well. At the other end of the spectrum, on the heels of countless recent mobile flops, HTC looks too afraid to gamble.

Which is in part understandable, given the market’s current competitiveness and its, well, inability to connect to wide mainstream audiences. It pains us to even go there, but we must stress wearable devices are a long way from truly catching on.

So yeah, we get why HTC is backing down, but Google put the Taiwanese on the official list of Android Wear partners a few months ago, and the search giant may not be as understanding as we are of the situation. Hence, once (if?) HTC decides to go for it, Big G might no longer be on board. Food for thought, Mr. Peter Chou.

As far as Fossil goes, the Texas-based clothing and accessories designer and manufacturer could enter the smart wearable scene with a focus on unique, luxurious looks. Rumor is they’ll have Intel on their side instead of Qualcomm to take care of internals such as CPUs and GPUs, and what’s interesting is they kinda sorta pioneered the whole smartwatch current way back in 2003.

More than a decade ago, Fossil tried its hand at a tiny wearable “Wrist PDA” gadget running Palm OS (pictured above), which for fairly obvious reasons flopped. Hard. But you know what they say, second time’s the charm. Especially after getting rid of Palm OS.
