Dad creates prosthetic hand for son with just $5-10 and 3D printer

What’s a father to do when he’s faced with the challenging task of providing prosthetic for his son? An awesome dad would stick it to the man and build one from scratch.

Before 3D printing went mainstream, most people can only dream of having their visions ‘printed’ right there and into a tangible thing.* The 3D printing revolution is happening, as evident by Paul McCarthy’s use of 3D printing and free information on the web to make prosthetic hands for his son.

A custom prosthetic can run anywhere from a thousand dollars to tens of thousands of dollars, but the one McCarthy designed for his son costs just $5-10 to print.* That’s quite a saving!* The saving will become even more apparent when he has to readjust the prosthetic design as his son grows. *Something that could’ve cost a father his own arms and legs to provide for his son turned out to be just a few bucks—thanks to 3D printing.

3D printing has received some criticisms in recent months because some are using it to print functional handguns or other potentially harmful instruments.* Whatever the intentions are behind the DIY printing projects, the technology is allowing people to quickly manufacture their designs for much less than what it would cost to have it done at a design firm.
