Meaty heroines featured in Twi-ani's 'Good Meat Day' celebrations

Yesterday was November 29, 2013 or 11/29 which meant that yesterday was “Good Meat Day”.

So what’s “Good Meat Day”? It’s actually based on a Japanese pun, 1129 or i (1) i (1) ni (2) ku (9), or ii niku which literally means good meat. Japanese anime website Twi-ani celebrated the punomenal day by presenting five um… “meaty” heroines.

The heroines who made it in the list need not necessarily have a lot of “plot” but have to be a bit on the heavy side compared to most heroines.*Here are their five heroines:

Rihoko Sakurai (Amagi SS)- One of the heroines from Amagi SS, this girl eats a little bit too much and has a complex about being fat. She is often portrayed as a plus sized heroine.

Megumi Amatsuka (GJ-Bu)- Like Rihoko, this cute “little sister” also has a complex about being fat. Compared to the real “heavyweights” in the list however, she has nothing to worry about.

Nozomi Tojo (Love Live!)- The student council vice president who just loves to grope is known for having *a bust size of 90 as well as having an F cup. The anime’s artwork has recently portrayed her to be a bit more plump.

Mami Tomoe (Madoka Magica)- This lovable blonde magical girl is known for her kindness and her extensive amount of… “plot”. She is known for always eating cake… a lot of cake so it’s no surprise that she is often portrayed as a bit fatter. Now can you say Tiro Finale?

Super Sonico- Her making it to this list is absolutely no surprise at all. Many artworks featuring her (as well as her upcoming anime) have portrayed her to be a little fat. She is also known for her curves which makes her a favorite of figure makers and collectors.

The list provided only five heroines and a couple of surprises did not make it to the list including THE Meat, Sena Kashiwazaki from Haganai as well as “Useless Meat” Maou from Maoyu Maou Yuusha. Maybe these two aren’t as heavy as the other who made it.

Nvidia Shield price drops to $250 for limited time, games and accessories included

Nvidia couldn’t have sit the Black Friday deal frenzy out, especially since the Shield handheld console isn’t exactly selling like hotcakes, and so the gaming gear has been discounted for purchases via an array of retailers.

The most lucrative promo is definitely the one on Nvidia’s own online store, where the Shield costs $249. That’s $50 off the list price, plus you get some extra incentives free of charge. There’s a silver armor, otherwise known as a carrying case (normally $39.99), as well as full copies of Expendable: Rearmed and Sonic 4 Episode II THD, valued at $7 give or take.

Bottom line, a bundle worth roughly 350 bucks can be scored for $100 less. Pretty solid deal in my book. Besides, even if you’re still on the fence about getting the Shield, there’s plenty of time for a wise, well-thought decision. The special offer ends December 2 at 11:59 pm, so just as Cyber Monday wraps up.

Meanwhile, if you’d rather nab the mobile game console from a third-party seller, be sure to swing by Newegg, Best Buy, Amazon or GameStop. Their conditions and included freebies differ a little, but the dough to be shelled out is the same: $250.

Of the pack, Newegg quite clearly stands out, bundling the Shield with the same $40 case as Nvidia, but adding a 2-month subscription to Hulu Plus in the mix, usually going for $15.98. They also vow to ship the gadget in two days with no extra charge, so let’s give credit where credit is due and admit this may well be an even better offer than Nvidia’s. If you’re into Hulu, that is.

Remember, the Shield is a very unusually-looking device, sporting a flip-up 5-inch touchscreen with 1,280 x 720 pixels resolution. It runs Android 4.2 out the box (upgradeable to 4.3), packs plenty of heat (all things considered), courtesy of a quad-core Tegra 4 SoC, and can stream games from a desktop PC equipped with an Nvidia GTX 650 or higher video card. At the end of the day, it’s not spectacular, but at $250, it’s worth a shot.

Want a Black Friday bargain? Here's Xolo's new $120 Q500 quad-core smartphone

Xolo may not have any fancy ongoing Black Friday promotions for its crowd-pleasing smartphones, but the OEM that’s close to snatch Samsung’s Indian mobile crown has bargain hunters more than covered with a brand new dirt-cheap handheld.

Dubbed Q500, the latest Xolo-made gizmo has gone official without much fanfare, carrying a suggested retail price of $128 (Rs. 7,999), but being up for grabs already lower than that, at $117 via India Times Shopping.

And boy, does the 4-incher have a lot going for it. You know, given its price range, not when pitted against Samsung’s Galaxy S4 or anything. The number one selling point is quite clearly the processor running the hardware show, which rocks four cores and, get this, is a Qualcomm-made concoction, not your usual low-cost MediaTek solution.

A Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 clocked at 1.2 GHz, to be exact, which is no cream of the crop, but again, for $120 it’s essentially mind-blowing. Think about it, there was a time, not long ago, when that dough bought like a crammed tiny 3.5-incher with a single-core 1 GHz SoC. And now you get a 4-inch quad-core beast.

Maybe beast is overstating it, so let’s call it… not a pushover. More so as the rest of the features are, well, mostly mediocre:

  • 800 x 480 pixels resolution screen

  • Dual SIM support

  • Pre-loaded Android 4.1 Jelly Bean

  • 5 MP rear snapper with LED Flash, VGA front cam

  • 1 GB RAM

  • 4 GB built-in storage, microSD support

  • 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 3.0, GPS

  • 1,450 mAh battery

  • 116 grams weight

  • 118.5 x 63 x 10.7 mm dimensions

Retina iPad mini display is a 'distant third' behind Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire HDX

A new report indicates that the display on Apple’s much awaited Retina iPad mini is actually quite far behind its main rivals.

Only recently it was reported that the Retina iPad mini display has less color gamut than the iPad Air, which basically means that it shows less color.*While that might seem like an unfair comparison given the fact that the iPad Air has a larger battery and can compensate for a powerful display without compromising on battery life, its fair game to compare Retina iPad mini with the likes of Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire HDX. According to experts at DisplayMate, Apple’s latest tablet is a “distant third” behind these tablets in terms of display performance.

They compared all three tablets and found that Retina iPad mini provides 63 percent color gamut while both the Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire HDX provide 100 percent color gamut. The display on the new iPad mini is also said to consume more power, lack brightness as compared to the two rivals and is also said to be more reflective. The tablet is said to rank a distant third because of Apple’s “inexcusable” decision to use old technology, despite the fact that it once used to be the leader in mobile displays.

Amazon and Google have opted for Low Temperature Poly Silicon LTPS displays for Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 and the Nexus 7, these displays are outperforming the IGZO and a-Si displays in the current iPads.*So even though the Retina iPad mini has significantly higher pixel density than its predecessor, its color gamut is more or less similar to the iPad 2 which is nearly three years old. The display is sharper than the one on the original iPad mini, but it doesn’t really give its rivals a run for their money.

Samsung discounts tablets, laptops, digital cameras and TVs for Black Friday 2013

Samsung’s US online store is holding a special Black Friday 2013 sale, offering a wide range of TVs, as well as a number of tablets, laptops, digital cameras and other consumer electronic products with hundreds of dollars in savings.

The twist is, instead of pulling the plug on all promos at the end of the day, as is customary, Samsung will be keeping them live by Monday December 2. While supplies last, that is, so even if there’s time, you may want to hurry.

Sadly, Samsung’s most popular goods, Galaxy smartphones, aren’t included in the deal, which is strange given so many third-party retailers rely greatly on the S4, S4 Active, Note 3, S4 mini and so on and so forth to lead their pack of discounts.

To make matters worse, Sammy has but two tablets on sale from now until Cyber Monday, namely the Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition ($499.99 with 16 GB storage, $549.99 in a 32 GB variant) and the Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 Kids, up for grabs at $189.99 bundled with an orange bumper case, or $209.99 with a blue carrying case.

Moving on to bigger and more productive computing machines, you can score the Ativ Book 9 Lite 13.3-inch ultrabook at $729.99 ($100 off), or the Series 5 17.3-incher for $799.99 ($200 savings).

The digital cam selection is maybe the most generous of all, as the Android-powered Galaxy Camera goes for $399.99 and the WB250 14.2 MP smart point-and-shoot costs $129.99. Actually, no, scratch that, the television selection is most impressive, with slashed prices ranging from $149.99 for a 22-incher to a whopping $5,999 ($3,000 off) on a 75-inch F8000 Series Smart TV.

Be sure to check all items on sale at the source link below, don’t forget to spend sensibly and only buy things you need.

iPhone location tracking lawsuit from 2011 finally dismissed

A class action lawsuit filed against Apple in 2011 for alleged tracking of an iOS devices’ location has finally been dismissed.

It was discovered back in 2011 that iOS devices were collecting and storing location data. Basically the devices were storing cell tower location and Wi-Fi network data which would allow the device to track itself more precisely than the GPS. This lead to concerns about users’ privacy being at risk, given the fact that the data was also being sent to the computer if a user connected their device to it. Back then, Apple said that this behavior was due to a bug in iOS and that it was not intentionally collecting information about the location of its iOS devices.

After the bug came to light, Apple rolled out iOS 4.3.3 to fix it. However a class action lawsuit was filed again in the company in which plaintiffs argued that even when Location Services was turned off, the device would still collection location data. This, according to the plaintiffs, harmed the device’s performance by taking up additional storage space and straining battery life. Plaintiffs also alleged that iOS had been designed to transmit location data to third-party app developers, however Apple denied these claims.

Judge Lucy Koh ruled that*the plaintiffs had failed to show the existence of a genuine issue of material fact based on which the lawsuit could proceed, there exists no standing to pursue the claims against Cupertino.
