Mere days ahead of
Sony’s highly anticipated IFA announcements, an unofficial photo going around the web drops a bombshell, starring the oft-rumored SmartWatch 3 with, surprise, surprise, Android Wear pre-loaded.
When gossip was piling up as to
Sony’s third-generation smartwatch possibly running another version of the company’s proprietary operating system instead of Android Wear, everyone else’s favorite, the world of tech enthusiasts was decidedly split in two.
On one hand, there were those who appreciated Sony’s courage and defiance of “trends”. On the other, people reckoned it was foolish to reject a perfectly smooth, perfectly productive Android copy designed by papa bear Google.
But ultimately, all the controversy and back and forth may have been for nothing, as Sony seems to have cracked under pressure. Yes, a SmartWatch 3 is headed for this week’s IFA trade show in Berlin, but based on a fuzzy yet credible press render, it runs “full” Android Wear.
Good news? Perhaps, although we can’t help but wonder how Sony intends to make the timepiece feel special. Unique. Not a pithy Samsung Gear Live/LG G Watch clone. The design doesn’t look all that uncommon, and the technical tidbits speculated thus far are pretty humdrum.
1.68-inch 320 x 320 pix res display? IP58 certification for water and dust protection? Where have we heard all that before?
But maybe Sony’s other IFA-bound wearable piece will capture the spotlight. Nah, forget it, the SmartBand Talk is even less original and groundbreaking, acting as a more primitive fitness tracker with Bluetooth connectivity and a limited set of apps it can access.
Granted, the curved e-ink panel looks quite neat, but if this is all Sony has up its sleeve, it’s certainly no rival for
Motorola,
LG,
Samsung or
Apple. Not in the wearable sector, with smartphones being an
entirely different kettle of fish.
