Take a look at the Android TV’s game controller

Android-based game consoles have failed thus far, but Google is willing to give another go.

One of the highlights of Google’s I/O conference last week was its Android TV service. Available as a set-top box or embedded into televisions themselves, it promises to bring the Google experience to TV viewing.

As Android TV, as the name implies, is Android powered, one of the features Google highlighted during I/O is the ability to play Android games on the TV. It helps that Android TV is powered by Nvidia’s Tegra K1, giving the device some GPU muscle.

A few days after the conference ended, Redditors found a picture of the Android TV gaming controller a Google I/O attendee posted to Google Plus. This corroborates press renders of the controller discovered earlier.

Of course it’s not very likely that Android TV will do very well as a game console. So far every attempt to mix gaming and Android hasn’t done very well, from the Ouya to the Nvidia Shield so don’t get your hopes too high for some kind of gaming revolution.

Samsung Galaxy S5 mini goes official with 4.5-inch HD display, fingerprint sensor

The Galaxy S5 mini looks quite similar to its flagship sibling, but replaces most of the high-end hardware*with mid-range components.

Samsung has officially announced the Galaxy S5 mini, a compact version*of the Galaxy S5*that doesn’t deviate from the industry norm of mini smartphones that offer hardware that is nowhere near as high-end as their flagship counterparts.

The Galaxy S5 mini sports a 4.5-inch 720p Super AMOLED display, a small upgrade over the 4.3-inch qHD screen of the Galaxy S4 mini. Whether a 4.5-inch display can be called mini is still a matter for debate, though it’s certainly not out of the ordinary considering all flagship Android phones these days sport 5-inch and bigger screens, putting a damper on comfortable one-handed usage.

While the display has been downgraded, the Galaxy S5 mini does feature all the sensors of its bigger brother, including the fingerprint scanner and heart rate sensor. It also carries over the fake leather material with stitching on the back, though that shouldn’t be a bad thing for most since it does improve the ergonomics of the phone and makes it easier to handle.

The hardware on the Galaxy S5 mini is rather mid-range, and*includes a 1.4GHz quad-core processor, 1.5GB of RAM, an 8-megapixel rear camera, 2.1-megapixel front-facing camera, 16GB of internal storage that’s expandable via microSD cards,*Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0 LE, USB 2.0, GPS, and IR Remote connectivity, and a 2,100 mAh battery. There’s an LTE variant as well, which will also feature an NFC chip and support download speeds of up to 150 Mbps.

On the software front, the S5 mini has quite a lot in common with the Galaxy S5. It runs Android 4.4 KitKat with the newest version of Samsung’s TouchWiz UX, along with features such as Ultra Power Saving Mode (which disables the display’s color output and most other functionality to save battery life), Kids Mode, and Private Mode, a feature that allows a user to hide private files and lock them away with their fingerprint acting as the password.

The Galaxy S5 mini will be offered in four fancy colors:*Charcoal Black, Shimmery White, Electric Blue and Copper Gold.*Samsung hasn’t revealed its pricing, but the handset will be available in Russia in early July and will later roll out to other countries, with a dual SIM version titled Galaxy S5 mini DUOS for select markets.

Samsung introduces 850 Pro SSD with 3D flash memory

SSD from Samsung uses new V-NAND technology, which offers a high chip gigabit density.

Samsung unveiled Tuesday its next-generation of consumer solid state drives, the 850 Pro. Available in 28GB, 256GB, 512GB and 1TB capacities, the 850 Pro uses Samsung’s new 3D V-NAND flash memory technology.

This new V-NAND flash memory technology, thanks to what Samsung calls its “proprietary vertical cell structure,” (read: stacked silicon) promises twice the write performance and less power draw than its predecessors. According to a press release from Samsung, the sequential read performance reaches of the drive can hit up to 550 megabytes per second, while write performance can go up to 520MB/s. Random read performance can hit up to 100,000 input/output operations-per-second (IOPS), with write speeds of up to 90,000 IOPS.

The SSD draws an exceptionally low amount of power, *3.3 Watts for reading, 3W to write and 0.4 W for idle mode.

Samsung’s new V-NAND technology increases reliability, so much so that Samsung offers a fairly impressive warranty on the drive. It’s rated for up to 150 terabytes written (for an explainer on why SSDs die see this) and the drive are backed by decade long warranty.

Prices and availability have yet to be announced, but it’s expected sometime in the last quarter of 2014.

Radeon R9 280 and R9 280X cards will no longer be rebrands with AMD’s new GPU.

AMD’s best-selling *Radeon R9 280 and R9 280X cards will be getting a new GPU called Tonga sometime soon, according to a report by VR-Zone’s sister site*VR-Zone*Chinese.

Tonga is set to replace the Tahti Pro GPU found in the current generation of Radeon R9 280 cards, which are rebrands of AMD’s older Radeon HD 7950 and HD 7970 cards.Tonga will be based on the 20 nanometer process node and is said to include 2 GB of GDDR5 memory, but add-in-board partners could certainly increase that number to much more.

Currently pricing for the R9 280 starts at $299, but it’s not known if that will change come August or if Nvidia starts a price war with its mid-range GeForce cards.
