Computex 2014: AMD 'ambidextrous' Skybridge awaiting Intel's Skylake?

What will a market showdown between AMD’s Skybridge and Intel’s Skylake look like?

We saw the recent AMD announcements about its*plans for upcoming*high end “ambidextrous’” x86 and ARM processors. It’s likely, though, that the x86 portion*of those developments will see some action in AMD’s mainstream PC APU chips as well. Since the estimated time at the earliest would be end of 2015, what would the much expected AMD’s promised return to the arena face at that moment?

Well, not Haswell that is this year; not Broadwell, which starts end of this year as well — it may be Skylake instead.*Rumoured to be the first Intel core implementing 512-bit AVX SIMD extensions (similar to near future Xeon Phi versions), Skylake will be fully optimised for the 14nm process, and also have even stronger GPU portion both performance and die-portion wise, where “GT4″ Iris Pro gets dedicated eDRAM L4 cache bandwidth help on many LGA 1151 desktop and mobile SKUs. The memory bandwidth help will be there through DDR4 memory support, except for the ultra low voltage tablet parts, where LPDDR3 will still be supported. And oh yes, there are further power savings compared to Haswell and Broadwell.

Even though desktop and mobile Skylake parts will still top out only at four cores and eight threads, their added CPU and GPU performance, plus net usable bandwidth improvements will make them a pretty tough competitor to fight for AMD’s new cores. Furthermore, since Skylake microarchitecture will likely be*launched on everything from *two core tablets to 20+ core server parts during 2016, AMD will have to match that with scaled up parts for the whole spread, and that includes the optimised system level design — something sorely missed in current AMD server parts, for instance.

What will we see at Computex 2014?

Asia’s “big tent” *Computer expo will*likely to disappoint*– because most companies*have already let the cat out of the bag.

What’s next for the future of computing? You’ll probably find out at Computex. The “big tent” show for Asia — CES in the heart of OEM/ODM country — remains relevant solely because it happens on the home turf of so many companies that play a key role in the tech sector.

But this year will be different. In all likelihood, this year’s Computex will be remembered as a show without a defining announcement. That’s not to say that the show is drifting out of relevancy like CES; it’s just that this year the big x86 and GPU players have already had made their announcements prior to the show or simply don’t have anything to show off. Keep in mind: Computex will remain relevant simply because of its long tail of releases, and because it’s the meeting place between customer and ODM, but this year the pickings will be slim for the press.

A processing non-revolution

Intel, for example, has already lifted the kimono on its plans for the next year. A refreshed Haswell and Z97 chipset has already been announced and shipped, while Devil’s Canyon and the Pentium anniversary edition got their big reveal at the Game Developers’ Expo earlier this year. This Computex will show, indeed, that the desktop is alive and well **but we heard that weeks ago. Along with the announcement of a deal with China’s Rockchip. We can expect an announcement about an upcoming announcement about a 14nm version of Broadwell Y-series, but the juicy details won’t be available until this fall’s Intel Developer Forum. But Intel’s President, Renee James, who’ll take the podium for Computex’s first official keynote might drop some interesting surprises — but don’t expect a dozen mobile wins*(in contrast MediaTek, Qualcomm and Rockchip will have conveyer belts of hardware wins).

Instead Intel will likely highlight its effort in the “Internet of Things” during its keynote. It pulled the same stunt at CES in January when it had nothing else to say. We’ll see if Intel has something of substance to unveil, or if it resorts to this.

On another note, what will be interesting is to see if vendors are demonstrating DDR4 RAM on the showfloor of Computex’s Nangang Convention Center. The amount of vendors with DDR4 units on display could be indicative of how aggressively Intel is demonstrating its X99 platform behind closed doors.

No country for old GPUs

AMD and Nvidia are in a precarious place this Computex. Already, the second-highest powered cards from both companies can work their way through the most demanding games at 4K resolution. Thus, in order to move product and clear out excess silicon both*companies have shipped dual-core video cards that are far in excess of what the market demands. The Radeon 295X2 will have a place in highly niche, but low-volume, boutique PCs — not something that will dramatically alter the market.

Last year at Computex AMD announced that its Kaveri APU would be shipped by the end of 2013 (reiterating a promise from that year’s CES). Despite these promises VR-Zone was able to report that Kaveri would be released in 2014, *something that AMD began dropping hints on as the year progressed. This year, AMD’s Computex press conference will likely be defined by the launch of Kaveri’s mobile iteration. We’ll likely see a handful of wins in second notebooks and the embedded space, but as AMD’s Bernd Lienhard told VR-Zone at AMD’s APU tech day in Beijing tablet wins would not be happening. The same goes for Mullins, but, in the end, anything could happen.

Windows non grata

Microsoft, for its part, has already announced its next version of the Surface at a press event earlier this month. With no new Windows on the horizon, its keynote entitled “Microsoft Devices and Services: Partner Opportunity and Customer Value” will likely be a sure miss. Some non-selling Windows mobile devices may be introduced, but it won’t be as exciting as Computex 2011 when Microsoft gave us a first look at Windows 8.

The*show before the show?

This year’s Computex could very well be defined as the show where everything important was announced pre-show. It’s understandable why companies might want to skip the cacophony of the big tent show, but if the press is all gathered in one place it’s important to give us something. Historically, Computex is known as the more technically important event than CES. Hopefully there will be some surprise announcements this year that will keep it that way. Otherwise, this year’s show is looking like the doldrums.

Check back all this week for coverage of Computex from Taipei.*

Oricon announces their top 10 mangas for the 1st half of 2014

Oricon has finally unveiled which 10 manga titles did the best in terms of total copies sold*for the first half of 2014. The rankings were based on the Japanese manga sales from the period of November 18, 2014 until May 18, 2014.

Here are their results (The numbers presented are*based on the estimated sales, not the actual number of copies sold):

10) Nisekoi

by Naoshi Komi (2,418,041 copies sold) 9) Assassination Classroom

by Yuusei Matsui**(2,795,169 copies sold) 8) Silver Spoon

by Hiromu Arakawa (2,875,863 copies sold) 7) Ace of Diamond

by Yuji Terashima (2,914,977 copies sold) 6) Hoozuki no Reitetsu

by Natsumi Eguchi (3,060,694 copies sold) 5) Magi

by Shinobu Otaka (3,085,177 copies sold) 4) Naruto

by Masashi Kishimoto (3,247,920 copies sold) 3) Kuroko’s Basketball

by Tadatoshi Fujimaki (4,616,040 copies sold) 2) One Piece

by Eichiro Oda (4,936,855 copies sold) 1) Attack on Titan

by Hajime Isayama (8,342,268 copies sold)

Hajime Isayama’s Attack on Titan has finally broken the 5-year dominance of One Piece in these rankings by not only taking 1st place but by beating it by such a huge margin. Attack on Titan overwhelmed its competition*with 8,342,268 estimated copies sold while the previously dominant One Piece only*had 4,946,855 estimated copies sold. This may be due to Attack on Titan’s recent anime adaptation which skyrocketed the series into worldwide acclaim. meanwhile, Kuroko’s Basketball, Naruto, and Magi still remain strong contenders as the other three manga round out the top 5. Naruto’s recent success may be attributed to the fact that the series is already in its “Final Battle” phase. While nine of the titles on the list have had anime adaptations, Assassination Classroom on the other hand has proven that an anime adaptation is not needed to*be included*in Oricon’s Top 10 manga list as the series makes it to #9.

HTC W8 said to be Windows Phone 8.1 flagship for Verizon

The HTC W8 could spearhead HTC’s return to the Windows Phone market, as the company reportedly ditches plans for a super high-end Android flagship.

HTC is said to be prepping a flagship Windows Phone device codenamed W8, after more than a year of absence from the Windows Phone scene.

HTC was said to be working on a Windows Phone device based on the 2013 HTC One, but that never came to pass, perhaps because of the constant losses the company has been going through in the last few quarters. With the W8, the rumor mill is now*pitching a Windows-flavored variant of the Taiwanese manufacturer’s newest One flagship,*with @evleaks hinting at a Q3 release on North America’s largest carrier.

According to @evleaks, the W8 will also sport features like stereo BoomSound speakers and the Duo camera that debuted on the HTC One M8, but those are the only details offered by the notorious leakster. If the similarities in naming are anything to go by, we’ll like see the HTC W8 sport pretty much the same hardware as the M8 while being powered by Windows Phone 8.1, though probably with a design that is reminiscent of existing HTC Windows Phone devices like the 8X and 8S.

With HTC’s plans for a Prime variant of the One M8 reportedly on hold, it looks like the W8 could be the next best thing to look forward to.*It would be interesting to see what the W8 will offer – with Nokia’s hardware business now under Microsoft’s umbrella, the time is ripe for manufacturers to make their presence felt in the Windows Phone market, and HTC might just be able to turn some heads*by matching Windows Phone’s clean and sleek look with its critically acclaimed hardware design and craftsmanship.

Google opens a webform to comply with EU's data privacy policy

Google finally exercises the “right to be forgotten”, with the implementation of a search removal request system in the European Union.

Does it feel irksome that some of the old info that you have on the web is still behind you because of Google Search? Well, if you’re in the European Union, then you now have the chance to forever remove these outdated and possibly unwanted information, with Google’s implementation of a new search removal request system.

The webform, from where the option was first announced yesterday, briefly stated how the system came to be, and how to use it. According to the given instructions, users can submit a request for the removal of certain data related to them, in accordance to the European Data Protection Law. Europeans who wish to have a little more privacy may have their outdated information completely removed, at their request, and at the fulfillment of a few identification requirements.

News of Google receiving requests and even complaints about data privacy are hardly new, *and we all already knew how it eventually lead to the renewal of their data privacy policies last 2012. However a more decisive action was taken when a series of complaints and court cases came, which stemmed from a recent privacy complaint from a Spanish man, who was actually the one who advocated the “right to be forgotten”.

On the surface, it looks pretty easy to justify the need to hide or conceal information that would otherwise be sensitive for users. However, the issues behind this new policy*go quite deeper*than what could be seen at a glance.*For instance, Google specifically pointed out in its webform that certain “outdated information” that would still be of sufficient public interest, such as “financial scams, professional malpractice, criminal convictions, etc.” may still remain open to the internet public.

We may not be able to completely predict the ramifications of this new system, but a few opinions suggest that there could be technical loopholes, though that is already an entirely different topic in itself.
