iOS 7 now powers 78 percent of all Apple devices

Latest stats from the company show iOS 7 adoption is still on the rise.

Back in the summer of 2013 Apple showed off its latest and greatest iOS update at the WWDC. The update went through a long beta process and was finally released for the public in September. Adoption of the latest platform update took off after it was released, as millions of iOS users around the world were waiting to try out the entirely new user interface and dozens of new features that the company had unveiled.

In the latest platform distribution statistics released by Apple, iOS 7 is seen powering 78 percent of all supported iPhone, iPad and iPod touch units around the globe.*iOS 6, which is released in the fall of 2012, now accounts for 18 percent of all remaining devices. 4 percent of all iOS devices are running firmwares that were released prior to iOS 6 primarily because those devices don’t support Apple’s newer firmwares.

Over the past few months iOS 7 adoption has steadily been on the rise. In October figures released by Apple showed iOS 7 running on 64 percent of all devices. It clinched that figure faster than its predecessor was able to. Adoption of Apple’s latest firmware is only going to increase as new devices powered by it continue to sell, and as more users finally pull the trigger to update from their legacy iOS firmwares.

iFile for iOS 7 finally available in Cydia

The popular file manager for iOS devices is now available in the alternative app store.

There’s an active jailbreak community out there which focuses on freeing up iOS devices, thus allowing them to do what is not possible by default. Jailbreaking an iOS device opens up a world of customization options, users can install new tweaks that radically change the user experience as well as apps that Apple wouldn’t allow on the App Store. One such app is iFile, a very popular file manager for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch that has been around for quite some time now. The updated iFile for iOS 7 has finally been released in Cydia, which is often referred to as the “alternative” app store.

This is the perfect time for an updated iFile to be released, given the fact that last month the first ever iOS 7 untethered jailbreak was released, which even covers all of the latest Apple mobile devices. Moreover, last week, an untethered jailbreak for iOS 6.1.3-6.1.5 was also released, meaning that those who can not upgrade from that particular firmware can also enjoy the freedom a jailbroken device offers.

iFile is all encompassing file manager and viewer for iOS devices that runs under use root. It gives users full access to the files on their iOS devices just like Finder does on a Mac. It is perfect for advanced management and customization of a device’s files. The updated version brings user enhancements, design parity with iOS 7, new icons and new buttons. iFile for iOS 7 is now available for download from Cydia.

Samsung’s Galaxy Grand Lite will be called the Galaxy Grand Neo

The Galaxy Grand Neo will be a downgraded version of the Galaxy Grand 2 and will launch sometime during the first quarter

Samsung will market the Galaxy Grand Lite as the Galaxy Grand Neo. The device cleared FCC certification last week, and should see an official unveil at the MWC. The Galaxy Grand Neo is a less powerful version of the Galaxy Grand 2 and will likely be available for sale in the U.S.

The Galaxy Grand Neo will feature a 5-inch screen with an 800 x 480 resolution, 1.2GHz quad-core processor, 1 GB RAM, 8 GB internal storage, 5MP camera at the back and a 2,100 mAh battery. It will come with Android 4.3 Jelly Bean out of the box. The hardware on the Galaxy Grand Neo is decidedly lacklustre, and Samsung’s decision to include a WVGA screen on a handset in 2014 is bewildering.

Samsung has managed to sell a lot of handsets like this over the last year, but it remains to be seen whether it can continue to do so in 2014. In the low-end segment, we now have the Moto G, which is a stellar handset for the price it is offered in, and there are a bevy of manufacturers that offer much better handsets at the $250 segment, like Blu Mobiles.

NUS startup BigSpoon is on the quest to improve restaurant services

When we visit a popular or busy restaurant, often times we encounter scrambling waiters who are too busy to attend to us. It affects our dining experience: we sometimes feel frustrated trying to get the waiter’s attention and walk out thinking that the service is bad. Not only that, we receive the same impersonal treatment that involves the waiters doing nothing more than taking orders and bringing food to the table.

A new company started by two National University of Singapore students wants to change that.

“We are on a quest to make service in restaurants wildly better than it is today.”

Sony might launch a Windows Phone device this year

Microsoft is allegedly in talks with Sony in getting the manufacturer to launch a Windows Phone handset later this year.

Microsoft has not managed to acquire as much market share as it would’ve liked with the Windows Phone platform. Although manufacturers like HTC, Samsung and Huawei pledged interested in the platform and launched a few handsets, interest in Windows Phone is waning, and there is one manufacturer that is constantly churning out Windows Phone handsets: Nokia.

The reason most manufacturers are giving the ecosystem a wide berth is the fact that nine out of ten

Windows Phone sales come from Nokia. Granted, there have not been any new devices from Samsung or HTC in a while, and what few handsets were launched, like the Ativ S Neo from Samsung, failed to attract any consumer attention.

For 2014, however, it looks like Microsoft is trying to reinvigorate manufacturer interest as sources revealed that officials from Redmond are conducting talks with Sony in launching a Windows Phone handset later this year. It has been alleged that a device would launch sometime in the second quarter of 2014.

Ever since Sony broke off its alliance with Ericsson and started creating mobiles in-house, it has been hard at work in finding the ideal mix of hardware and software elements, the culmination of which is the Xperia Z1. Like Microsoft, Sony is trying to bring its different product offerings together, and has started offering PlayStation games on its mobile handsets. As it already makes a notebooks running Windows under the VAIO moniker, it could launch a Windows Phone handset under the same brand.

Microsoft is also said to be courting ZTE in a bid to get more Windows Phone handsets out in the market. It is also said to be in talks with various Indian manufacturers, like Micromax and Xolo over launching Windows Phone handsets. One significant roadblock for most manufacturers when making a Windows Phone device is the licensing fees, and it looks like Microsoft is considering removing the licencing fees and offer the Windows Phone platform for free, similar to what Google does with Android.
