Lindsay Lohan to sue 'GTA V' makers for using her likeness

Former Disney star Lindsay Lohan is apparently preparing to sue developer Rockstar games for using her likeness in Grand Theft Auto V.

Here’s a contender for the weirdest news of the week: Lindsay Lohan, the once cute star of films such as the Parent Trap, is planning to sue Rockstar for using her image throughout parts of Grand Theft Auto V.

The folks over at TMZ have taken a shot at identifying areas of the game which might have caused Lindsay Lohan to stop and think, “Hey, isn’t that me?” One mission involves escorting a woman who apparently looks like the actress away from the paparazzi, while another mission references a hotel where Lohan once lived.* It’s certainly a longshot. Perhaps if you squint your eyes and stand upside down, some women in the game might look like Lindsay Lohan.

Grand Theft Auto V broke sales records in its launch week, raking in a ton of money. Lindsay Lohan wont be the first ‘celebrity’ to sue the developer in the hopes of getting a piece of that pie. Rapper Daz Dillinger pointed his team of lawyers in Rockstar’s direction back in October for allegedly using two of his tracks in the game without permission.

Looks like another long and pointless lawsuit is on the cards.

Jolla CEO wants to bring Sailfish to Android mobiles

Jolla’s CEO highlights the advantages his upstart mobile operating system has over the competition in a recent interview.

Tomi Pienimak wants you to give Android a break.

In a recent interview with Finnish magazine Talouselämä, Pienimak, the CEO of Jolla, outlined the case for giving his company’s new OS a chance.

Jolla is a Finnish startup that was formed by ex-Nokia designers, and launched its first mobile device, the Jolla, earlier this week. The device is the first device to feature the Sailfish OS, which features a lot of design cues from Nokia’s MeeGo OS. One of the major selling points for Sailfish is the fact that it is compatible with Android, which means that users can install Android apps alongside Sailfish native apps.

Jolla’s CEO stated in a recent interview that there are no major issues in getting Sailfish onto Android devices, and that many users in countries like China already sideload a mobile*OS onto their handsets.

Sideloading the Sailfish OS onto Android devices is straightforward, according to*Pienimak.* He also mentioned that upgrading a mobile OS may be new to users in Finland, but that it is a mainstream practice in countries like China.

“For us it is a possibility to distribute our operating system especially in China. There are websites that already distribute [OS] software and the Chinese customers are doing it *so we don’t have to teach them,” he said. “We just have to get Sailfish to those websites – and to make sure that Sailfish will run on different kind of Android devices.”

Another advantage that Sailfish has is security. In light of the NSA leaks, wide swaths of customers are wary of using services and utilities that the U.S. government agency has access to. Jolla is a Finnish organization, and its servers are located in Finland, which means that NSA cannot get its hands on them. A statement on its website confirmed this: “Jolla servers are not in U.S., so we are not subject to any U.S. rules or regulations regarding disclosing information.”

However, for all its advantages, Sailfish does not have LTE compatibility. Although the Jolla mobile device has LTE hardware, the software does not allow LTE functionality. Jolla did mention that it is working on adding LTE, and that it will be available shortly.

Also, even if Jolla create an official port of Sailfish for Android devices, it is unlikely Google will allow it on the Play Store, as the Cyanogen team have seen. The CyanogenMod Installer was yanked from the Play Store last week for asking users to switch on ADB (Android Debug Mode), which allows for USB debugging.

iOS leads Android in online Thanksgiving and Black Friday shopping period

While the holiday weekend saw customers lining up outside stores to get better deals, online shopping through mobile devices was up 9 percent this year, and iOS led Android throughout the Thanksgiving and Black Friday shopping period.

The data comes from the Digital Analytics Benchmark Group at IBM, which is a platform that tracks millions of transactions and analyzes terabytes of data from over 800 online retailers in the U.S.*The report revealed that use of mobile devices for online shopping was up 9 percent this year, and that mobile devices now generate over 37 percent of all online shopping traffic as well as 21 percent of online sales.*Even though tablet users placed 1.5x more sales, at least twice as much traffic was driven by smartphones.

Out of the 37 percent online shopping traffic generated by mobile devices during the Thanksgiving and Black Friday weekend, iOS accounted for 80 percent of the traffic as well as 17.3 percent for all sales. Android devices only accounted for 3.75 percent of all sales generated.*The report also revealed that iOS users spent more per order, nearly 18 percent on average, roughly $131.34 versus $111.35 on Android.

iOS devices also generated more than 26 percent of all overall mobile traffic during this period as opposed to 11 percent generated by Android. Other platforms such as BlackBerry and Windows Phone are not represented because they didn’t generated enough activity.

Steve Jobs initially wasn't a fan of white Apple products

Apple has offered its products in white for quite a long time now, but the company’s co-founder wasn’t a fan of the color at first.

Many stories have been told about Steve Jobs’ perfectionism when it came to design as well as the look and feel of Apple products, products that the late co-founder’s good friend Sir Jonathan Ive crafted from materials that appealed to Jobs.*It was back in 2001 when Apple first started using white color for all of its products, but the designers had to convince their boss that the color was worth going for.

Author Leander Kaheny reveals in his new book Jony Ive, The Genius Behind Apple’s Greatest Products that “Job’s instincts were against white products.” Ive however was in favor because he had been crafting products out of white plastic since his school days. He opted to start making Apple’s products in white after the iMac went through its translucent colorful plastic phase. When the company made the iBook in white, Ive wanted to use the same color with the iPod as well.

To make Jobs happy, because he disliked white color, the designers created several variations such as snow white, glacial white, cloud white and moon gray, which looked like white but was actually gray. Jobs liked it and approved it for a keyboard and then the color ended up being used for the iPod’s earphones.*Doug Satzger, who was a part of Apple’s design group, said that the moon gray and seashell gray shades that they developed were so close to white that they appeared to really be white, but actually they were gray. So the cords on the iPod’s earphones, which most people called white, were actually a shade of gray.

Samsung launched the Galaxy S Duos 2 without much fanfare. The device was directly listed on the Samsung India site, and is available for purchase now. Samsung has seen a lot of success with the Galaxy S Duos, which was the bestselling Samsung device this year in India. With the Galaxy S Duos 2, it is looking to achieve a similar result.

The processor is also slightly faster at 1.2 GHz to the 1GHz on the Galaxy S Duos. In terms of connectivity, the only change is the inclusion of Bluetooth 4.0. Other features that have been retained include Wi-Fi, 3G and MicroUSB v2.0. The device comes with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean out of the box, which is sure to be welcome news to customers.

The Galaxy S Duos 2 price has been set to a little over $175 (Rs. 10,999), and that price will be lowered once the device becomes available at various online retailers.
